The virtual identities people create have a limited amount of value and meaning. People do spend their real money on virtual things in games so there is some sort of value. I think to some people their virtual identities mean a lot. It depends on the situation the person is in.For people like the handicapped man in Second Skin, the online identity they create helps them open up and feel accepted. People like this are more likely to find a lot of meaning in their virtual self.Other people just play the game for fun and don't get too sucked in. These people are likely to find less meaning. I think cyberspace being the "new frontier" is a possibility. I saw a documentary once about the game "Second Life" and it showed business companies having meetings online in the game. This could make things easier for companies and would save time and money for traveling costs. I don't think all the new technology is going to affect the average person. I don't see anything too drastic happening in our lifetime, but I won't rule out the possibility.

I agree with you and felt touched when the handicapped people could express themselves without feeling inadequate to others playing the game since noone can see what anyone really looks like.
ReplyDeleteIt was really sweet to see the handicapped man feel so empowered by the games. I definitely agree with you, to some people their virtual identities mean a lot to them. Their virtual identities are how they want to see themselves and who they want to be.
ReplyDeleteI was really touched when the handicapped man in the video was so pleased to be accepted by others while playing the game. However, I think its sad that he has to be put into character to feel that way. I also think that businesses having online meetings on a regular basis might make people even more lazy since they have one less reason to wake up and get out of their house in the morning.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that it isn't going to effect most people on their day to day basis. I think that this kind of technology will serve to better some aspects of society (I believe that the Army still uses video games to train?) and like you said, businesses could utilize it in surprising ways. Interesting points though.
